During the discussion, the President stressed the importance of ensuring an uninterrupted supply of rice at reasonable prices and deliberated on immediate measures to achieve this objective. Enhancing the country's storage facilities to prevent shortages and maintain a steady supply of rice was also a significant focus of the meeting.
Attention was drawn to the potential impact of using Nadu rice for value-added products, which could reduce the stocks available for direct consumption. Addressing this, the President emphasized the necessity of balancing value addition with maintaining sufficient reserves for public consumption.
Additionally, the President proposed the introduction of a QR code system to streamline fertilizer subsidies and integrate them effectively into national agricultural production, promoting greater efficiency and sustainability in the sector.
The meeting was attended by Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe, Chairman of Lak Sathosa Dr. Samitha Perera, and representatives from small and medium-scale rice mills.
