Justice Murdu Nirupa Bindushini Fernando of the Supreme Court took her oath this morning (02) as the 48th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka at the Presidential Secretariat. This historic appointment makes Justice Fernando the second woman to hold the position in Sri Lanka’s history.
Her appointment was approved by the Constitutional Council following the retirement of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
Justice Fernando began her career at the Attorney General’s Department in 1985, rising to the roles of Deputy Solicitor General in 1997 and Additional Solicitor General in 2014. With over 30 years of service as a State Counsel, she was appointed to the Supreme Court in March 2018.
An alumna of Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa, and a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo, she also previously served as Senior Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department. Justice Fernando is currently the most senior female judge on the Supreme Court bench.
Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, attended the swearing-in ceremony.
