Commemorating the Nation’s War Heroes: Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2024
On November 24, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the main commemoration ceremony of Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2024 and the Poppy Flower Celebration at the Cenotaph War Memorial in Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo. The annual event, organized by the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association in collaboration with the Armed Services, is a solemn tribute to honor the war heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the security of the nation.
This occasion paid respects to those who gave their lives from the First World War to the present day. It was marked by the presence of key dignitaries, including Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General H. L. V. M. Liyanage, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, and Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera.
The ceremony was also attended by foreign ambassadors, senior officers of the tri-services, members of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association, and the relatives of fallen tri-service members who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The event underscored the nation’s gratitude and collective remembrance of its courageous defenders.
