Anura Kumara Dissanayake Takes Charge as Minister of Defence at Akuregoda
Anura Kumara Dissanayake assumed his duties as the Minister of Defence on November 22 at the Defence Headquarters in Akuregoda. In a significant move, he engaged in discussions with the Commanders of the Tri-Forces and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, focusing on the Ministry’s ongoing activities and future plans.
During his address, Minister Dissanayake highlighted the importance of restoring and maintaining public trust in the public service. He referenced the overwhelming 80% mandate given by the public in a recent election, emphasizing their demand for meaningful transformation and accountability. While acknowledging the constitutional provisions and legal framework, he firmly asserted that the will of the people remains the ultimate power in governance. He reiterated the government's duty to provide political leadership that aligns with the aspirations of the citizens.
The Minister urged all public servants to unite under a shared vision of building a better future for Sri Lanka. He called for collective efforts to ensure that the Ministry’s work contributes meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General HLVM Liyanage, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, and other officials from the security forces and the Ministry of Defence.
